Department of History

Departmental Grants

The Department of History offers three internal grants: the Abbott Gleason Research Development Fund; the Abbott Gleason Short-Term Research Fund; and the Abbott Gleason Undergraduate Research Fellowship.

This fund provides history concentrators with support for short-term research, or partial support of larger research endeavors. All History concentrators are eligible to apply. The grant provides $250-$750 in research support.

Students enrolled in HIST 1992 (Prospectus Workshop) and HIST 1993-4 (Thesis Workshop) can expect to receive this grant twice during the course of thesis research.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, via email to the Director of the Honors Program.

This competitive fund provides history concentrators pursuing a thesis with support for 1-3 weeks of full-time research to be completed over winter or summer break. This grant provides up to $1000 in base support; student recipients of financial aid may be eligible for additional funds.

The Director of the Honors Program and the Undergraduate Committee will review applications in November and April, and will confer 2-3 awards annually. 

Application materials include: 

  • A brief statement that explains the premise of the research project, the potential impact of this research on its field, and the feasibility of the project (including reference to specific sources to be consulted and plan for use of funds). Applications should use the HIST 1992 Mini Grant Application Assignment as a guide.
  • A simple budget.
  • An informal “note” of recommendation from a member of the History Department in support of this research, submitted via email to the Director of the Honors Program. This note may come from the thesis advisor, and should not exceed 1 paragraph in length.

This fellowship provides one history concentrator pursuing a thesis with support for a summer of full-time research. This grant provides up to $2500 in base support; student recipients of financial aid may be eligible for additional funds.

The Director of the Honors Program and the Undergraduate Committee will review applications in April, and will confer 1 award annually. 

Application materials include:

  • A calendar of summer research plans. 
  • A simple budget. 
  • A letter of recommendation from the thesis advisor.
