Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The Brown Journal of History is a student-run journal dedicated to publishing outstanding research in history and related fields by Brown undergraduate students at all levels. BJH publishes one volume per year, at the end of the spring semester, covering a selection of five to six essay-length contributions for the benefit of a general readership at Brown and beyond.

The primary responsibility of the editor is to develop an editorial strategy for the year, which may involve a thematic, methodological, geographic, or other focus, and to ensure that this strategy is implemented at every stage of the publishing process, from soliciting submissions to manuscript review, acceptance, revision, production, and print. While the editor is responsible for all final decisions, they are expected to proceed in consultation with the managing editor and the larger editorial staff. In addition to their content-related duties, the editor of BJH works closely with the managing editor to hire, train, and manage approximately eight to ten associate editors as well as graphic designers and other production staff as needed. Throughout the year, the editor schedules and leads regular meetings for the BJH editorial staff.

The journal’s managing editor is chiefly responsible for managing the editorial staff. Besides coordinating the hiring of approximately eight to ten associate editors (including vetting and interviewing candidates), the managing editor sets and monitors appropriate deadlines and handles one-on-one communication with associate editors. Managing editors also support the editor on editorial strategy, for example by crafting calls-for-submissions as well as putting together guidelines on style and design for the associate editors.

Both positions are open to Brown undergraduate students at all levels and of any concentration. Successful candidates will have demonstrated a passion for the study of the human past as well as a commitment to upholding the highest standards of academic integrity. A strong background in analytical writing as well as basic familiarity with the rules and conventions of academic scholarship in humanities and/or social science disciplines will enable the candidate to oversee a timely production process. The ability to work as a member of a team, to communicate effectively, and to lead by example are likewise important criteria for selection.
