Department of History

A historian of modern European history, I write on the histories of economic life, migration, work, and political economy. I focus on the nineteenth century, a pivotal period in European history that allows for occasional (research) incursions into both the early modern and modern periods. Currently I am at work on my first book titled "The Migrant's Spirit: Industrial Revolution in the German Lands." The study situates Germany's rise as a global industrial powerhouse in the context of nearly a century of large-scale German migration to the Americas.

Born and raised in Germany, I immigrated to the United States together with my family in the early 2000s. After completing a B.A. in history and economics summa cum laude at Emory University, I worked to advance environmental and social justice in partnership with various non-profit organizations in metropolitan Atlanta, GA. I hold a PhD in modern European history from Stanford University.
