"This fall, I am moving Down Under to study the 'Forests and the Final Solution' in Sydney, Australia.
I am honored to have received two fellowships to complete my dissertation research on the environmental history of the Holocaust. First, I was awarded a fellowship by the Holocaust Research Institute at the Royal Holloway University of London, where I will receive intensive training on Holocaust history and storytelling this summer. This opportunity will help me explore new ways of teaching Holocaust history to both students and the public.
I also received the 2024 Sydney Jewish Museum Research Fellowship for my project, 'Roots of Survival.' My research examines how forests played a role in the lives of Holocaust survivors, using evidence gathered by the Australian War Crimes Commission. My goal is to include the Australian-Jewish experiences in the broader story of the Holocaust and to highlight how the forest influenced their death and survival. I hope my work will bring the voices of Australian survivors to the international stage and ensure their stories are heard.
Finally, I am eager to explore Australia’s diverse landscape and learn more about its history and people. I am fascinated by the relationship between people and their environments and am looking forward to traveling across the Outback. As an avid sailor, I am also excited to sail Australia’s waters. These fellowships will help me connect the environmental history of the Holocaust to a global context, enriching both my research and my teaching."
