Sofia Barnett '25 Wins New York Times Essay Contest

As the 2025 winner of a New York Times essay contest, history concentrator Sofia Barnett '25 will spend two weeks on a global voyage alongside Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist and international reporter, Nick Kristof.

Since 2006, Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist and international reporter, Nick Kristof, has held an essay contest for college students. One winner is selected from a competitive pool of undergraduate and graduate students with journalism backgrounds to travel on a fully-funded global reporting trip alongside Kristof. The 2025 winner, Sofia Barnett, is a senior history concentrator at Brown who will embark on an international voyage for two (or so) weeks after Commencement. In her own words, Sofia describes the experience ahead:

“I'll be traveling internationally with Nick Kristof for two weeks reporting on the humanitarian consequences of the cuts to USAID. Our destination will be unconfirmed until a few weeks ahead of our departure due to the changing nature of global conflict, but we will travel to Ukraine, or Liberia and Sierra Leone. We will leave a few days after Commencement. I will be reporting my own stories for the New York Times throughout this two-ish week period.”

Stay tuned for more from Sofia!
