Student Spotlight: Deven Kamlani '25

History and East Asian Studies concentrator Deven Kamlani '25 spent six weeks completing a summer internship at global law firm DLA Piper as a Raja Gaddipati Fellow. The competitive fellowship serves as an in-house pipeline initiative offering undergraduate students insight into a large law firm environment. In this spotlight, Deven reflects on his experience.

"This past summer, I was honored to be selected as a Raja Gaddipati Fellow at global law firm DLA Piper’s New York office. Over six weeks, I contributed to various projects across multiple practice areas, ranging from corporate litigation to case law research and international pro bono work.

Whether drafting briefs for an employment law case or directly consulting with refugee clients preparing for interviews with U.S. officials, I relied heavily on the logical argumentation, research, writing, and analytical skills developed through my coursework at Brown. A particularly rewarding aspect of my fellowship was assisting pro bono attorneys working to revise the legal framework related to refugees with disabilities in Brazil––a task for which I felt well-prepared thanks to the History department’s courses on Latin America.

All in all, these experiences have reinforced my passion for the law as a platform for intellectual growth and an instrument to positively impact individual lives and the broader community. Moving forward, I am especially eager to pursue a global legal practice that integrates my enthusiasm for cross-cultural engagement with my professional aspirations."
